Superficial and deep wounds. Rapid revascularization and incorporation.
Diabetic Foot Ulcers Foot ulcers, which
are casually referred to as foot sores or foot blisters, are
a common problem in diabetic foot care. More than 800,000
diabetic patients experience foot ulcers each year. If left
untreated, these foot sores can often become infected and
may eventually lead to amputation.
Facts and Figures
- Over 16 million people are diagnosed with diabetes
- Foot ulcers account for over 20% of hospital admissions
in diabetics per year and is the number one reason for hospital
visits in the diabetic population
- 85% of all amputations in diabetics are preceded by a foot
ulcer
- Two thirds of all amputations are performed on diabetics
- 50% of diabetic patients with an amputation have their other
limb amputated within 5 years

Why do foot ulcers occur?
Basically, people with diabetes have poor blood flow in their
hands and feet. They also tend to have a decreased sensation
to pain. These two factors combined with an outside factor
such as shoes that rub on a certain spot over time and cause
the skin to break down can lead to a wound that is difficult
to heal.
Prevention is the
Best Medicine For Diabetic Foot Care
- Control your diabetes through diet and insulin
intake
- Regularly check your blood sugar level
- Regularly check your feet for callus and breaks in the skin
- Wear good footwear
Types of foot ulcers
There are different types or grades of foot ulcers based on
different things, but the most important is depth. A superficial
or shallow foot ulcer is easier to heal than a deep foot ulcer.
Deep foot ulcers present other problems because they tend
to expose tendons and bones. Because these wounds almost always
have some sort of bacterial colonization, infection is a real
concern. If a deep foot ulcer gets infected down to the bone,
it can lead to a very long treatment with antibiotics, and
may ultimately lead to amputation.
Chronic or non-healing wounds are wounds that do not respond
to conventional treatment and need a little extra help to
heal. The GRAFTJACKET® Ulcer Repair Matrix is ideal for
these chronic wounds and can be used on either a shallow or
deep wound.
Is GRAFTJACKET®
right for You?
GRAFTJACKET® Ulcer Repair Matrix is donated
human skin. It is processed at the highest of standards for
safety and biocompatibility. Over 500,000 grafts of the base
material have been implanted in many different applications
with zero incidence of disease transmission and very low incidence
of rejection.
If you have a wound that is slow to heal,
especially if it is deep, GRAFTJACKET® Ulcer Repair Matrix
may be right for you.
You are a candidate
for GRAFTJACKET® Ulcer Repair Matrix if:
- Your ulcer is considered deep, exposing tendon and/or bone
- You have had an ulcer for 6 weeks or more
- Other grafts, such as APLIGRAF® or DERMAGRAFT® have
failed
- You prefer one graft application to several
How GRAFTJACKET®
Ulcer Repair Matrix Works
GRAFTJACKET® matrix, when implanted, does several things.
The goal is to help repair the foot sore as quickly as possible.
Doing so will help prevent infection and possible amputation.
GRAFTJACKET® is an important new advance in foot care.
Wound Coverage
GRAFTJACKET® matrix provides immediate coverage to the
foot ulcer. This is particularly important if your wound is
considered deep. In these cases, your physician will be most
concerned about the wound becoming infected down to your bone.
Building Blocks for
Repair
GRAFTJACKET® matrix is actually a collection of preserved
"bio-building blocks" for repair. Chronic or non-healing
wounds do not heal for many reasons, but can often be repaired
if given a few essential building blocks.
The most important is an intact, three-dimensional
matrix to build on. Think of it as the steel scaffolding of
a new building. The shape, the strength, the look all begins
and depends on the internal structure of the building. The
three-dimensional structure provides a means for the body
to rebuild the area of missing tissue.
Another important aspect of the GRAFTJACKET®
matrix is that it is revascularized very quickly. New blood
vessels very quickly gain access through preserved blood vessel
channels and, essentially, turn the GRAFTJACKET® matrix
into living tissue. It is this restored blood flow which helps
to promote healing.
Lastly, all the components that are in GRAFTJACKET®
matrix are preserved in their bioactive state. This means
that the body can use these components to help repair itself.
